Hi there, I'm Hilary Wu.

I am a passionate educator and researcher dedicated to making a meaningful impact in the field of special education, particularly within the context of autism spectrum disorders. With a decade of experience and a deep commitment to promoting inclusivity, I'm excited to share my journey with you.

Educational Background
I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Cal Poly Pomona, where I first delved into the intricacies of human behavior and cognition. After my first experience working with students with exceptional needs, I pursued a Master of Arts degree at California State University, Los Angeles, specializing in Autism Spectrum Disorders. I also earned an Education Specialist Credential in Mild to Moderate Support Needs, which equipped me with the necessary skills to support students with diverse learning needs.
Professional Experience
Throughout my career, I have embraced diverse roles, including instructional aide, behavior specialist, behavior respite provider, and special education teacher. These experiences have deepened my understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities within the special education realm, reinforcing my commitment to improving the lives of individuals with autism and related disorders and other exceptional support needs.

Research Interests
My academic journey is fueled by an interest in autism and co-occurring mental health disorders. I am dedicated to exploring the complexities of these conditions, with a specific focus on understanding the double empathy phenomenon and the complexities of camouflaging and masking in culturally and linguistically diverse young adults. Additionally, my research extends to the vital realm of teacher-family partnerships, specifically culturally and linguistically diverse families, recognizing the crucial positions they hold as caregivers and advocates for their children.

Current Endeavors
I am in my second year of pursuing a Ph.D. at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). This journey is a continuation of my mission to advance knowledge in the field, and I'm thrilled to contribute to the ever-evolving discourse on special education and autism spectrum disorders.

I'm currently part of a research team where we are researching underutilization patterns at a California regional center that serves a large CLD population. We will be running focus groups to hear from caregivers of children with disabilities to help us understand the experiences and challenges within services at regional centers.
